New LITA Electronic Journal: Telecommunications Electronic Reviews The new edition of the LI NewsWire 1.2 Conference Announcement: Thirty-sixth Allerton Institute October 23-25, 1994 New Roles for Classification in Libraries and Information Networks ********************************** Introducing the DIAC Virtual Conference Listserv! For those that couldn't attend the CPSR conference, DIAC-94, on "Developing an Open and Equitable Information Infrastructure" and for those who want to continue attending, we've established the "DIAC VirtualConference", a listserv that we'll use to continue the discussion that we started in Cambridge. Note that the discussions on this listserv will be used in the developing of DIAC-96 etc. There were nearly 30 workshops at DIAC-94 - too many for anybody to attend. Topics included "direct democracies" in MUDs, using the networkfor non-profits, the NII and the disenfranchised, networks for the blind, the ethics and values office of the NSF, measuring the NII, using the NII and the Internet to encourage political dialogue, and many others. At each workshop, the convenors and participants were encouraged to work together towards some objectives and to record their "findings" -preliminary, final, or just plain guess-work - and make them available on the list. In this way, those that couldn't participate in some of the workshops can still join in. We will also strive to make as many of the proposals and readings available electronically. If you'd like the hardcopy proceedings, send $25 to CPSR, P.O. Box 717, Palo Alto, CA 94302. To join the virtual conference, send mail to listserv@cpsr.org with the message: SUBSCRIBE DIAC Firstname Lastname To post to the list, send mail to diac@cpsr.org ************************************************ New LITA Electronic Journal: Telecommunications Electronic Reviews LITA announces the creation of a new e-journal, Telecommunications Electronic Reviews (TER). The primary function of TER is to provide reviews of and pointers to telecommunications and networking resources, both print and electronic. Resources will include books, articles, serials, discussion lists, software, training materials andother items of interest to professionals dealing with networking and telecommunications, primarily related to libraries and information centers. Topics covered may include, but are not limited to,telecommunications and networking technologies; hardware and software;network operating systems and applications; technical management issues; training and personnel issues; organizational, regional and national networking; library perspectives; and research and development. The reviews are substantive and evaluative, and include audience level ratings and references to other similar materials. The journal will at times include multiple reviews of the same item and invites reader and author comment on published reviews. TER will also publish thought-provoking commentary on issues related to telecommunications and networking. It will be published irregularly using the following technologies: Listserv (to be determined), Gopher (info.lib.uh.edu) and World Wide Web (to be determined). There is no subscription fee. TER seeks contributors with expertise in subject areas relevant to telecommunications and networking. Submissions should be sent as ASCIItext e-mail to the Editor-in-Chief, Thomas C. Wilson(lib4@jetson.uh.edu). ************************************************ The new edition of the LI NewsWire 1.2 is hereby published for free browsing on the Internet. We will revisit that topic but with a broader perspective. In the intervening thirty-five years, the information landscape has been transformed. Library catalogs now often serve as gateways to larger information networks as well as to locally-mounted commercial bibliographic databases. Electronic texts are distributed on the Internet, and library users can now access a wide variety of resources from essentially anywhere in the world. Planned to follow the 1994 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science, we invite to Allerton House librarians, classification researchers, and other information professionals who are interested in the organization of information within the context of this new environment. Some may question the role of traditional library classifications on these information networks, but few would question the need for some means of classification. The invited speakers will help us focus on new developments with classification schemes as well as research and management efforts to improve access. Just as the 1959 Allerton Institute brought library administrators, library science faculty, scholars, and information entrepreneurs together, we hope that the 1994 Institute will bring a diverse group together who can profit from the gathering. In addition to the presentation of thought-provoking addresses, round table discussions will give participants the opportunity to explore the issues in a less formal setting. The Conference Site Robert Allerton Park is located near Monticello, Illinois. It includes approximately 1,500 acres of woodland property, and Allerton House, a 20-room Georgian mansion. Conference activities will be held at Allerton House. The area near Allerton House provides conference participants with an opportunity to enjoy natural settings that include formal gardens and sculpture.
